How to Save an Email Attachment

  1. Open the email that has the attachment
  2. Right-click on the attachment
  3. Choose Save as...
  4. Use the window that opens to navigate to the appropriate folder on your local hard drive. If you want to create a create a new directory:
    1. Left-click on New Folder button just below the address bar.
    2. Type the name of your new folder over the highlighted New Folder.
    3. Tap enter on keyboard to seal name
    4. Left-click on your new folder to open it if it not already open
  5. You will see the name of the attachment in the File name field near the bottom of the window.
  6. Enter a new name for the file or keep the one provided by the sender.
  7. Left-click the Save button
  8. The document is now saved on your local hard drive
  9. Repeat for additional attachments if necessary.

.doc, .zip, .htm or .pdf
Files to Your Server

  1. Navigate to the folder where you saved the file.
  2. If the file is a .doc file:
    1. Left-click the file name to open it in Word
    2. Choose Save as... from the File menu or from the Orb orb
    3. Choose .pdf as the file type
    4. In the window that opens, navigate to where you would like to save the .pdf file locally.
    5. Find the file name in the File Name field.
    6. Rename the .pdf file to eliminate uppercase letters, spaces or punctuation in the file name. Now is also the time to shorten the file name to eight characters plus the three character extension filename.ext. This is known as eight dot three file naming. A file named Reflections Entry Forms.pdf might become reform09.pdf.
    7. Click the Publish or Save button
    8. Your .pdf file will open in your pdf reader.
    9. Make sure it looks ok.
    10. You can now close your pdf reader and Word.
  3. Invoke your FTP application. Here we are using Filezilla.
  4. If Filezilla asks to update itself, let it go through the activity.
  5. Click the down arrow next to the Quickconnect button and click your site, or go to
    File » Site Manager » Select Entry » Connect
  6. If needed, visit Filezilla Help
  7. Filezilla displays your local folders on the left and your remote server folders on the right.
  8. Use the local folders to navigate to the file you want to upload from your PC. To move up one directory click the icon of a folder followed by two dots folder icon followed by two dots.
  9. Use the remote server folders to navigate to the folder (directory) where you will store the file online.
  10. Double-left-click the local file name in the left pane to move it to the remote folder.
  11. Verify that the file is listed in the remote folder in the right pane.
  12. Use your web browser to navigate to the URL to check the file's integrity.
  13. Highlight and copy the URL.

How to Link to the Uploaded File

  1. Invoke your text editor; we will be using Nvu.
  2. Connect to your remote site by double-left-clicking your site name.
  3. Use the directory list to navigate to the document that will link to your new file.
  4. If you are not sure where to find the document to add the link to:

    1. Open your web browser.
    2. Navigate to your website.
    3. Check your menu items for an appropriate category.
    4. Browse to the appropriate page.
    5. Check the URL in the address bar.
    6. The URL is the path to your online folder and files.
    7. For example the URL
      http://www.mysite.com/0506/forms.html
      
      refers to a document named forms.html which is stored in a folder named 0506.
    8. Return to Nvu and navigate to the 0506 folder, or whatever folder your document is in.
  5. Double-left-click the document name to open it for editing.
  6. In Preview view, place your cursor where you want to add the link. If adding the link to a numbered or bulleted list, place your cursor behind the final character in the preceding list item, and tap enter key on keyboard. A new new bulleted line should appear.
  7. Left-click the Link button link button in the toolbar. It usually resembles a link of a chain.
  8. Enter the descriptive text that your visitor will see in the Link Text box.
  9. Paste the URL into the Link Location field.
  10. Click OK button.
  11. Click Publish button upload in toolbar. Some programs use upload or put rather than publish.
  12. Browse to the online page to check the appearance and functionality of the link.
